During use over time, transmission fluid picks up dirt and other foreign particles. These particles can build up into thick sludge that interferes with shifting, acceleration, and it can cause your transmission to generate more friction and heat. That is why having a transmission flush performed at recommended intervals is vital. During this service, a special machine is used to remove all of the old transmission fluid and replace it with clean, fresh fluid.
A transmission flush helps keep your transmission cool and properly lubricated, maximizing its performance and lifespan. The last thing you want to have to do is replace a burned-up transmission, which is one of the most expensive parts to replace.
In order to prevent your car’s transmission from overheating, it’s important to have the transmission fluid changed at manufacturer-recommended intervals (every 48 months in most cases). This is especially important if you drive up a lot of hills, or frequently tow with your vehicle.
The Difference Between a Fluid Change and a Fluid Flush
Though they may sound like the same thing, a transmission fluid change (also referred to as transmission pan service) and a fluid flush are two different services:
Fluid Change – The transmission pan is manually drained, inspected, and cleaned. Then, the transmission filter is replaced and new transmission fluid is added, leaving a mixture of old and new fluid. This service replaces 50 to 60% percent of your transmission fluid.
Transmission Flush – A cooler line flushing machine is used to expel all of the fluid from your transmission and purge any accumulated particles and deposits. Then, the transmission pan is inspected and cleaned and a new transmission filter is installed. Finally, fresh, new transmission fluid is added. During this service, 100 percent of your transmission fluid will be replaced.
Signs That Your Vehicle May Need Transmission Service
If your vehicle’s transmission starts to behave unusually, it is important to come in for an inspection as soon as possible to prevent further costly problems.
There are some things to be aware of that can indicate you may have a transmission system issue, including:
- An illuminated check engine light: This light can mean several different things, but it typically is an indication of a transmission issue.
- Your vehicle hesitates after shifting gears – You’ll usually feel this when shifting from park into first gear and the vehicle will pause before moving forward. Sometimes, this can also happen when shifting past first gear or shifting from park into reverse.
- Gears are slipping – An optimally functioning transmission system will properly keep track of gear shifts. If the system is failing, it may unintentionally shift into neutral and prevent you from being able to control the vehicle’s acceleration or deceleration.
- It’s hard to move the manual shifter into gear – A clear indicator of trouble is if it is harder than normal to physically move the shifter between gears or it won’t go into gear at all.
- Unusual noises coming from the engine when in neutral – If there is a knocking, grinding, or other unusual sound coming from the engine when the vehicle is in neutral (or even accelerating), there may be a transmission issue.
- Strong burning smell – Dirty, overheated, or low transmission fluid can cause a strong burning smell within your engine. Once this occurs, the fluid can no longer lubricate the transmission system components properly or keep the system cool enough. Clean transmission fluid usually smells slightly sweet or tart.
- Transmission fluid leak – Transmission fluid should not be actively and visibly leaking from your engine. If it is, you may see red puddles under the middle of the car.

Depending on the type of vehicle/transmission you have, the answer to this question will vary. The first place to look for the specific recommendations for transmission service intervals is your car owner’s manual.
No matter if you have an automatic or manual transmission, you should have a transmission fluid change done at each of the recommended mileages. This will keep your transmission system properly protected and running optimally.
For automatic transmissions, the service intervals to have a transmission flush done vary from every 30,000 miles to over 100,000 miles (or even never). Typically, in newer model vehicles, the recommended interval is between 60,000 and 100,000 miles.
In manual transmissions, many manufacturers recommend that a fluid change be done every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. If your vehicle is getting heavy-duty use, it is often recommended to have the transmission fluid changed every 15,000 miles.
However, if your transmission fluid is “burnt” or dirty, it should be replaced as soon as possible to keep your transmission properly protected and running optimally.

Your car owner’s manual will provide you with specific instructions for your type of vehicle. In general, it is simple to check the fluid in an automatic transmission system. On the other hand, the process can be slightly more difficult in a manual transmission.
To check the transmission fluid:
Automatic transmission – Usually, an automatic transmission will have a fluid dipstick that allows you to check the fluid quality and level. Make sure you don’t confuse the transmission dipstick with the crankcase dipstick (See your car owner’s manual for the exact dipstick location).
When checking the automatic transmission fluid, make sure the vehicle is parked on an even surface, the engine is warmed up and running, and the transmission is in park.
Manual transmission – Checking the transmission fluid in a manual transmission can be slightly more complicated. Some newer vehicles now include a dipstick for the transmission fluid, but this has not yet been made a standard across all vehicles. So if you have a manual transmission vehicle and would like to check the fluid, we recommend you bring it to your closest Goodguys location. Our technicians will put your vehicle up on the lift and we can properly check it for you.
When checking your transmission fluid, keep in mind that clean fluid will be a translucent red. If your fluid level is low, top it off to bring it to the proper level. If the fluid is dark, has a burnt smell, and/or has bits of dirt or metal in it, then it needs to be changed so it can provide the proper levels of performance.
